Australian Medical Council EOIs

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) is seeking Expressions of Interest from consumer members for its Council.

What is the opportunity?

The Australian Medical Council is an independent national standards body for medical education. Its purpose is to ensure that standards of education, training and assessment of the medical profession promote and protect the health of the Australian community.

Members of Council (appointed according to the Constitution) are drawn from a wide cross section of the groups associated with medical education, health delivery and with the standards of medical practice in Australia, and include:

1. Those with expertise in medical regulation

2. Those with experience with the medical schools

3. Those with experience in the specialist medical colleges

4. Representatives of the medical profession

5. Medical students/junior doctors

6. Specialist education trainees

7. Health consumers and community members

8. Those involved directly in health services delivery

9. The Chair of the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils

10. The CEO of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care

11. The Chairs of each of the four AMC Standing Committees

How often does the Concil meet? 

The Council meets twice a year in outer metropolitan, regional and remote locations. A general meeting (usually held mid-year) and the Annual General Meeting (usually held in November). At the Annual General Meeting the Council receives and considers the audited financial reports of the AMC, the reports of the Directors, and appoints the auditor (if necessary).The Council also elects the President, Deputy President and a number of the AMC Directors.

Every member of the Council has full membership and voting rights and responsibilities.

Membership of Council includes two persons each of whom has a background in and knowledge of consumer health issues.

The Term of Appointment is specified at the time of appointment and the maximum term of appointment of a Member is four years.

Over and above a sitting fee of $377 per day to members of the Council, The AMC will meet the cost of necessary accommodation, meals and incidental expenditure, such as taxi fares. The AMC Secretariat will organise travel and accommodation on behalf of all Members.

What is the application process?

When the AMC is filling positions on its committees by seeking expressions of interest, it sets up a selection panel for the committee. The panel short lists applicants and interviews those short listed for the position.
