Cancer Australia toolkit
What was the project about?
In 2011, Cancer Australia launched its National Framework for Consumer Involvement in Cancer Control (the Framework). While the Framework provided the principles for involvement, Health Issues Centre was asked to develop a web-based practical toolkit to help people implement it.
The tools would be aimed at six distinct user groups, offering each group with relevant resources and appropriate examples. The target audiences were: Chief Executive Officers and executives, consumers, health professionals, organisational leaders, policy makers and researchers.
Who did we partner with?
Cancer Australia
How did we go about it?
The nature of the project demanded consultation with a variety of leaders, including representatives of each of the six target audience groups. Early on in the project a day-long national workshop was held, to respond to early work and set future directions.
From there, with a strong mandate to keep the resource tailored to these audiences and accessible to all, material was gathered and developed. An engaged project working group, chaired by a consumer leader, gave ongoing feedback on the appropriateness of the tools as they were written.
What was achieved?
The toolkit includes videos, case studies, definitions, quotes from leaders, practical templates, exercises, key research references and other useful links. It is the first of its kind in Australia, providing a level of detail and resources that did not previously exist. It continues to be widely viewed within the sector as a highly accessible and useful tool for anyone wanting to work with consumers in health.
When did we do the project?
March-December 2012
