Real People Real Data

What was the project about?

In 2014, we were engaged to test and evaluate a new storytelling tool.

The ‘Real People, Real Data’ tool uses strategies to convert consumers’ stories into usable data applying prescribed themes, such as: ‘information and understanding’; ‘whole of person care’; ‘respectful care’ and ‘carers and support’.

Once analysed thematically, the data can also be displayed in a visual format called the Journey Map. This data can be used to argue for policy or practice changes at both the government and health service level.

Who did we partner with?

Consumer Health Forum

How did we go about it?

Our role was to trial the tool with a small number of consumers via face-to-face and phone interviews. We gathered consumer stories, analysed the real ‘data’ provided by consumers. The data was categorised by stage, for example ‘diagnosis’, and was assigned a set theme or criteria, such as ‘information and understanding’.  The analysis was presented visually in a Journey Map.

What was achieved?

  • We collected and analysed five consumer stories using the ‘Real People, Real Data’ Toolkit and method.
  • We provided feedback on the use of the toolkit and advice on how to refine the toolkit.
  • We submitted a final report with our findings and recommendations.

When did we do the project?
